 HYBRIDIZATION

  1. Atomic Orbital of same or Nearly same energy intermix to give new Orbitals of exactly same energy.
  2. Super trick for calculating hybridization.    

       Z= 1/2{ Number of valence electrons on central atom + Negative charges on compound - Positive  charges on electron + Number of  Monovalent atom(H,Cl,Br,F,I)}

Example - N in NH3

Z= 1/2(5+3)

=4

Sp3 Hybridization

O in H2O

Z=1/2(6+2)

=4

Sp3 Hybridization

C in Co3 -2

Z= 1/2(4+2)

= 3

Sp2 hybridization

Si in SiF4

Z=1/2(4+4)

=4

Sp3 Hybridization

S in SF4

Z=1/2(6+4)

=5
